Causes of Leaking Toilets
Cistern Constantly Running
If your leaking toilet is constantly running and the cistern fills up, then it is likely there is a faulty inlet valve. This is because inlet valves control the water going into the cistern. The inlet valve also stops the water when it reaches a certain level.
When the inlet valve is broken, it means water constantly fills up the cistern. The water goes down the overflow point causing a leak into the toilet bowl.
Slow Water Leak
This leak is usually caused by a faulty outlet valve. The purpose of the outlet valve is to keep the water in the cistern and release it when the toilet is flushed. When the outlet valve is faulty, it causes water to leak into the bowl.
Often this type of leak is slow, so it may not be noticed at first. However, if you notice the cistern is filling up with the toilet being flushed, it means the outlet valve is faulty.
Toilet Leak Behind the Toilet Bowl
A toilet leak behind the toilet bowl is usually a result of worn rubber gaskets. The type of rubber gasket that is worn, determines how the leak is fixed. For example, if it is the Pan Collar Rubber that is worn, this requires taking out the toilet, changing the rubber seal, and then reinstalling the toilet.
If another type of rubber gasket needs to be replaced, this is usually an easier job. However, what needs to be done will depend on the style of the toilet (eg wall hung etc)
